Gunkanjima
Abandoned Island in Nagasaki
Hashima Island, Nagasaki, Japan · 2024
Hashima Island — known as Gunkanjima, or Battleship Island — was once the most densely populated place on Earth, housing Mitsubishi coal miners and their families until the mine closed in 1974. What drew me here was the collision of industrial ambition and total abandonment: concrete apartment blocks frozen mid-decay, stairwells open to the sky, corridors still holding the texture of daily life fifty years gone. I wanted to photograph not ruin porn, but the quiet persistence of structure — the way walls hold their geometry even as nature and salt air reclaim everything else.
